'Wellness Center' a chiropractic approach to health Couple combine physical therapy, counseling for total wellness
Newberg residents now have an alternative for treating the mind and
body at the Smalling Chiropractic and Wellness Center, which opened
Sept. 25 at 2119 Portland Road.
Gerald Smalling, a chiropractor with 26 years' experience, and his life partner Mary Corning, a life coach and intuitive counselor, work together to offer what Corning calls "a holistic approach" to health. "It's a very complimentary approach," she said of their two disciplines. "How often do you have back pains when you're stressed out?" As a chiropractor, Smalling specializes in relieving nerve pain through spinal manipulation. "My emphasis is on auto accidents, but I treat a variety of general conditions," he said. "I worked as a medic in the Air Force and served in Southeast Asia. I was planning to attend medical school, but finding out about chiropractic, I knew that was what I wanted to do. It was one of those times in your life that the light bulb comes on." Originally from Oklahoma, Smalling practiced in New Mexico before moving to Oregon after meeting Corning, who entered the counseling field after working as a horse trainer. "There's a lot of psychology in that profession," she noted. "You can't force things - that's not good for horses or people. In counseling, I don't focus on 'shoulds,' but peeling away the layers that develop when you're not your natural self. People often don't realize they're feeling, much less what they're feeling. I want to help them develop a deeper awareness." Working together, the duo hope to develop resources not only for area residents, but other alternative health professionals. "I think it's a unique niche in Newberg," Smalling said. "We hope to allow our clients to look at their lives from several different aspects and see what they can do to be their best selves."
